The Challenge

Air NZ Terminal at Nelson Airport

Nelson Airport’s terminal redevelopment called for a comprehensive, airport-grade technology infrastructure across a complex multi-tenant site — including public terminal areas, the Air New Zealand Koru Regional Lounge, front and back of house operational spaces, and the control tower. Each area had distinct requirements, and all systems needed to integrate seamlessly within a live, operational airport environment where disruption to passengers and airline operations had to be kept to an absolute minimum.

The scope spanned structured cabling, fibre and fusion splicing, CCTV, AV, MATV, security, and a site-wide public address system — all requiring careful coordination across multiple tenancies and stakeholders including Nelson Airport and Air New Zealand. The public address system in particular needed to support integrated announcements across all tenancies while meeting the clear, reliable audio standards expected of a public transport hub.

The Solution

Teltrac delivered a full technology infrastructure package across Nelson Airport, covering structured cabling, fibre, AV, MATV, security, and a site-wide public address system. A Commscope structured cabling and fibre solution formed the backbone of the installation across the terminal, with dedicated works completed for the Air New Zealand Koru Regional Lounge and the control tower as separate scopes within the same project.

Key Elements

  • Site-wide Commscope structured cabling and fibre installation covering CCTV, AV, and security outlets throughout the terminal
  • All associated fibre installation and fusion splicing across the site
  • Site-wide public address solution — designed, installed, and commissioned — with integration allowing individual tenancies to make their own announcements
  • Full MATV installation and termination across the site
  • Air New Zealand front of house and back of house works throughout the terminal
  • Commscope structured cabling and public address solution for the Air New Zealand Koru Regional Lounge
  • Commscope structured cabling solution for the control tower

Why This Solution

  • Commscope is a globally trusted structured cabling brand with a strong track record in large-scale commercial and infrastructure environments, making it well suited to the demands of an airport setting
  • Consolidating all technology disciplines — cabling, fibre, AV, MATV, CCTV, security, and public address — under a single Teltrac installation simplified coordination and ensured all systems were designed to work together from the outset
  • A purpose-designed public address system with tenancy-level announcement integration gives each occupant — including Air New Zealand — operational independence while maintaining a consistent passenger experience across the terminal
  • Delivering dedicated scopes for the Koru Lounge and control tower within the same project ensured consistent cabling standards and seamless integration across all areas of the airport

Installation

Teltrac managed the full technology installation across Nelson Airport’s terminal redevelopment, coordinating works across the main terminal, Air New Zealand front and back of house areas, the Koru Regional Lounge, and the control tower — each with its own requirements and stakeholders. All installation, fusion splicing, commissioning, and testing was carried out in close collaboration with the airport and Air New Zealand teams, with works carefully staged to avoid disruption to the airport’s ongoing operations throughout the project.

Outcome

Nelson Airport’s redeveloped terminal is now supported by a robust, fully integrated technology infrastructure — from the public-facing terminal and Koru Lounge through to back of house operations and the control tower. The site-wide public address system gives each tenancy the ability to communicate independently with passengers while maintaining a consistent and professional terminal experience. The Commscope cabling and fibre backbone ensures the airport is well-positioned to support future technology upgrades as Nelson Airport continues to grow.
