The Challenge
Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub is one of Christchurch City Council’s flagship post-earthquake infrastructure investments — a major multi-sport facility designed to serve athletes and communities across Christchurch for generations to come. A development of this scale demanded a high-performance technology infrastructure capable of supporting reliable connectivity, comprehensive security, and a professional-grade sound system across a large, multi-venue outdoor and indoor sports environment.
The complexity of the site — spanning multiple sports fields, indoor facilities, and public areas — meant that the cabling backbone, wireless and CCTV infrastructure, and audio systems all needed to be carefully designed and installed to deliver consistent performance across every corner of the hub, including outdoor areas where weather and distance posed additional challenges.
The Solution
Teltrac delivered a complete multi-system technology fit-out for Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub, combining a CAT6a Systimax structured cabling backbone with a powered fibre solution for CCTV and WiFi, and a site-wide QSC sound system. Each system was designed and installed to meet the performance demands of a high-profile public sports facility in continuous use.
Key Elements
- CAT6a Systimax structured cabling solution providing a high-performance network backbone throughout the facility
- Powered fibre solution supporting CCTV surveillance and WiFi systems across the entire site
- Site-wide QSC sound system delivering professional-grade audio across all areas of the hub
Why This Solution
- CAT6a Systimax cabling provides the bandwidth and performance headroom required to support a busy, multi-use public facility with high concurrent connectivity demands
- Powered fibre is the ideal solution for distributing CCTV and WiFi across a large, spread-out site, eliminating the distance limitations of copper and reducing the need for additional switching equipment in the field
- QSC is a globally respected professional audio brand trusted in sports venues, arenas, and public facilities worldwide — ensuring consistent, high-quality sound across all areas of the hub
- Delivering all technology disciplines under a single Teltrac installation ensured full compatibility between systems and a streamlined commissioning process
Installation
Completed in June 2018, Teltrac managed the full installation of structured cabling, powered fibre, and the QSC sound system across Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub. Works were coordinated closely with the Christchurch City Council project team and wider contractors to ensure all technology systems were installed, tested, and commissioned ahead of the facility opening.
Outcome
Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub opened as one of Christchurch’s premier sporting destinations, equipped with a robust technology infrastructure that supports the facility’s day-to-day operations and the thousands of athletes, officials, and visitors who use it each year. The CAT6a backbone and powered fibre solution ensure the hub is well-positioned to adapt to future technology needs, while the QSC sound system delivers a professional experience worthy of the facility’s status as a flagship community asset.
